Nigerian sprinters and field athletes excelled across the programme, with strong performances in the 100 metres, 200 metres, and relay events. The country's long jumpers and shot putters also added to the impressive medal haul at the Zimpeto stadium.
Kenya finished as the second most successful athletics nation with 26 medals, driven primarily by their distance runners. Algeria placed third with 19 medals. The athletics competition was the largest single discipline at the Games, featuring 46 events across track, field, and road events.
